Zhuhai, China, will host one of the world’s largest retail developments when built by late 2014 – Summer International Retail and Center and Mixed Use Development. This major destination, designed by 10 Design, contains 360,000 sqm leasable retail space together with commercial, hotel serviced apartment and residential spaces totaling 510,000 sqm of accommodation. The site of the development is unique in this important growing city, as it is the meeting point between the grid of the city and the natural topography of the surrounding hill range.
10 Design created a dynamic “urban super wall” approach, which helps to define the site edge with the urban grid. The super wall is made of series of giant, stacked stone, steel and LED blocks that are stacked to open and cantilever out across the street. The LED blocks further provide entry gateways and break out points that reveal the soft edge of the building, defined by planted terraces and a garden. The terraces reflect meandering paths that pedestrian may choose to take throughout the building. They undulate and create valleys that natural provide gathering points, plazas and shaded courtyards.
The Summer Group chose to provide community space with the shopping mall, creating an environment that also has a natural landscape. Affleck, partner at 10 Design, predicts that these design decisions will make Summer International Shopping Mall “one of the major destinations in Southern China. Construction for the Summer International Shopping Mall in Zhuhai has begun in 2012.
